I was planning to do a post about my new plans for the new year and blah, blah, blah, but the last 48 hours have changed all of that. It was brought to my attention that there was a law passed in October that goes into effect (affect?, I always get those confused) Feb. 10, 2009. It is called the the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) and it is intended to protect our children from lead through tougher testing requirements for all products intended for children under the age of 12. Sounds great, right? Who doesn't want to protect their kids from lead? But let's look at some reprocussions of this law. For me personally, I won't be able to sell hairbows anymore because there is absolutely no way I can afford to test my RIBBON and THREAD for lead. From what I understand, each test costs $300 and each batch has to be tested so that would mean that I would have to test each spool of ribbon (all 500 of them, ok only kidding about how many. I don't know how many spools of ribbon I have, but I have 4-5 photograph boxes full and then some.) and each spool of thread and every order of clips. So you can see the problem, right? I would have to charge $100 per bow to make up the cost! But it doesn't just affect me. Here is a blog that shows some other artisans (which, I don't consider myself to be, but these people are!) who will be affected, as well: http://www.endangeredwhimsy.com/
Here is a link to a good summary of the law: the post on Jan 2nd http://www.thesmartmama.com/bg/
So what can you do? You can write your legislators (it only takes a few minutes): http://capwiz.com/americanapparel/issues/alert/?alertid=12274476 .
You can sign a petition: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/economicimpactsofCPSIA/index.html .
You can get more educated about the law: http://nationalbankruptcyday.com/ , http://coolmompicks.com/savehandmade/ , http://www.cpsc.gov/ABOUT/Cpsia/faq/faq.html .
And you can tell other people so they can do all these things, too!
